Komnas HAM is an independent institution that its level of other State institutions that function carrying out studies, research, outreach, monitoring, mediation and human rights.
Komnas HAM aims:
- Developing conditions conducive to the implementation of human rights in accordance with the 1945 CONSTITUTION, Pancasila, and the United Nations Charter and the Universal Declaration of human rights.
- Improve the protection and enforcement of human rights to the development of the human person and the whole Indonesia's ability to participate in a variety of areas of life.

Plenary Meeting:
- Developing conditions conducive to the implementation of human rights in accordance with the 1945 CONSTITUTION, Pancasila, and the United Nations Charter and the Universal Declaration of human rights.
- Meningktkan protection and enforcement of human rights in order to berkembengnya the human person and the whole Indonesia's ability to participate in a variety of life.
SUBKOMISI
Membership in the period 2007-2012 Subkomisi Komnas HAM is divided by function Komnas HAM in accordance with laws i.e.: Subkomisi Subkomisi assessment and research, Education and extension, Monitoring, and Subkomisi Subkomisi mediation.
Subkomisi assessment and Research on duty and authorized to perform:
- The study and research of various international human rights instruments with the purpose of giving advice on the possibility of accession or ratification and;
- The study and research of various laws and regulations to provide recommendations on the establishment, change, and the repeal of legislation relating to human rights;
- Publication of the results of studies and research;
- Study of field studies, librarianship, and a comparative study in another country about human rights;
- Discussion of various issues relating to the protection, enforcement and promotion of human rights; and
- Assessment and research cooperation with organizations, agencies or other parties, both the level of national, regional and international level in the field of human rights.
